Our Heritage & Philosophy

Heritage

Frederick Living was founded in 1896 by Rev. N. B. Grubb, pastor of First Mennonite Church in Philadelphia in affiliation with the Eastern District Conference of the Mennonite Church USA. Previously a residential school, the property was purchased to establish a senior living ministry characterized by caring and affordability. That vision has grown into an 80 acre licensed retirement community that continues to be an example of Christ's love offering older adults a personalized invitation to, "live well with us."

 

 

Philosophy

Frederick Living, a not for profit retirement community, is affiliated with the Eastern District of the Mennonite Church USA and holds that each person is uniquely created by God. We value life and living and seek to enrich the whole person through programs and services that engage each individual; spiritually, physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and vocationally. We believe that Community entails intentionally living with high regard for our neighbor, generosity toward those in need and a willingness to invest gifts, talents and energies to create a diverse community where people are valued regardless of faith, tradition or physical ability. Community also involves living peacefully with one another while not compromising mutually understood and realistic expectations. Inclusion, connection, freedom and security are conditions of community that we seek to foster. We will also practice social accountability through civic engagement and helping to shape public policy that will impact those we serve. We believe that learning is a life-long process and that change can be good and healthy. We also believe that personal and organizational strength will only occur when core values of respect, integrity, compassion and excellence guide our discussions and decisions.
