Senior Fitness Assessment
Physical fitness has traditionally been associated with the more active young and the middle-aged population. However, fitness is most critical for those in their senior years. It is important for older adults to have adequate strength, flexibility, and endurance to accomplish everyday tasks. Assessing these components of fitness can detect weaknesses which can be treated before causing serious functional limitations.
Five years ago, the Senior Fitness Assessment was introduced at Frederick. The simple battery of tests determines upper and lower body strength and flexibility, as well as balance and agility. The results of the assessment give each resident a baseline to which he/she can compare improvement by subsequent assessments. The assessment results are also used as a guide for each resident to select which level of exercise class will result in the most improvement.
Since the first assessment, Frederick residents have averaged a 20% improvement in leg strength, 21% improvement in upper body strength, 24% improvement in balance, and 21% improvement in cardio endurance. Assessments are repeated every six months.
